La gastronomía de este restaurante se basa en el concepto de proximidad. Verdura, fruta, café, vino y carnes; todo cuenta. ¿Por qué? Porque usar ingredientes locales y ecológicos es bueno para el medio ambiente, para el cuerpo y para las papilas gustativas. El Chocolate proporciona un ambiente agradable para citas románticas, familias grandes y grupos de hasta 20 personas. Además, se puede cenar al aire libre en un día lluvioso en el patio cubierto con calefacción. Los comensales pueden disfrutar de un rato agradable con hasta 20 amigos en la sala de fiestas privada. We make a 75 mile round-trip from San Jose to Santa Cruz to eat dinner every Friday night. Been doing weekly since 2018 (pandemic disrupted the frequency but still did take out during that time). Our focus is on the desserts and our favorites are great - chocolate fantasy sundae, warm brownie, sin cake, truffles, Victoria hot chocolate with oat milk - these are chocolate artisan designs with more cacao emphasis than sugar and chocolate aficionados like us really enjoy it. Dinners are great as well - my longest go-to dish was Oaxaqueño Mo'le chicken plate - literally ate that dish for YEARS from 2018 to 2023. Then I 'discovered' their hand-rolled fettucine and salmon dishes - those are my new go-to dishes for 2023 onward. We are not drinkers so can't comment on the choices involving alcohol. Lastly, I read some of the more negative reviews here and respectfully disagree with most of them. The puzzling one is the recurring mention of 'dry' focaccia bread. We get that every week AND we were one of first to enjoy their switch to house-made focaccia bread. I do not find this to be dry at all - for me it's fresh and has just the right amount of moist texture. However, I understand others have different thresholds of dry. Regardless, this restaurant clearly is our favorite as we vote with our frequency of visits from San Jose for years.

We come here nearly weekly since ~2022 (prior to that year too but during pandemic it was spotty - once pandemic subsided, nearly weekly from San Jose, CA to Santa Cruz CA). This place is great - regular attendees every week (37 mile one way from San Jose every Friday). That's big endorsement for their chocolate desserts (we usually get ectasy sundae and warm brownie cake, chocolate gelato, etc). Our go-to entree dishes are past rosettes, Oaxacan chicken mole, hand rolled fettuccine, roasted pork. We don't drink alcohol so can't speak to that.

Pasta Rosettes, pasta w bolognese sauce, pork mole, all desserts were delicious. Chicken parm was a little dry and chicken soup was ok. Service was slow and one of our orders came late but all of our servers were nice, attentive and kept water for the table coming.

The food was OK but they were out of 2 of the 3 entrees we wanted to order. One pasta dish was in a pool of vinaigrette, perhaps spilled from the salad? The server brought out one drink right away but when I asked a few minutes later about my glass of wine, the server said he was waiting for the barista to come back from break (?). And restaurant customers must use a restroom in the bookstore next door, which seems awkward. Overall not a great experience.

The roasted pork in a wonderful chocolate/orange sauce is soooooo delicious! The hot chocolate drinks make a great dessert… no need for more dessert as each hot chocolate comes with a lady finger swamped with whip cream. I especially liked the Frida hot chocolate.

Everything we ordered was fine, but the food was kind of mediocre for the price. The menu didn't have a lot of main menu options in comparison to dessert options, so it seems like our mistake was probably that we came for a meal when it might really be a dessert place. The hot chocolate we got was good, but nothing special. My expectations were higher for a place named Chocolate.

True, eleven main course options (plus our dinner specials) are less than the seventeen options on our dessert menu. I wonder what we could add that would seem special enough for a return visit. I chose Chocolate for a birthday/retirement lunch with family. I was the only chocoholic in our party, but all enjoyed the food. We all got different hot chocolates to begin, a variety of main dishes, and different desserts, all of which we liked. I got a dark Colombian hot chocolate, which packed the kind of deep punch I like. I also got the chicken mole. They now have only one type of mole, which was a little spicier than I'm used to. I acclimated quickly and gobbled it all up, although the spice did affect the taste of the remaining hot chocolate. For dessert, I got the chocolate sin cake, which was nice and dark, though not as dense as I expected. We ate inside, which was rather dark--I had to walk over to a window to read the menu. Service was generally good and well timed, although the one soda ordered was not brought. The restaurant is quite small, so it's probably never loud inside; we were there mid-afternoon, and there were only a handful of other patrons. Metered parking right outside on the street was surprisingly available, although not cheap. There is also a covered lot right around the corner. We will definitely return!
