Cathy Ortega & Gerald Aquintey didn't know what to expect after finally opening up a Filipino small grocery & takeout joint together. The shop was doing great but they wanted to do more. They wanted to give Toronto a much more authentic Filipino taste and experience without the price of a flight to the Philippines. Kamayan / Boodle Fight (the formality of eating with your hands) was the obvious solution.

The Philippine Islands is an archipelago of over 7,100 islands, abundant in natural resources, endowed with a variety of seafood, tropical flora and fauna. Combine these with the Filipinos vibrant history of Malay-Polynesian origin which evolved through barter trade with China, the Middle East, India and South East Asia. Add the long-standing Spanish and temporary American colonization. Blend these with the inherent Filipino traits of hospitality, curiosity and creativity; and you have something out of the ordinary, diverse, exotic and authentically fusion cuisine. At CASA manila, we celebrate Festive Filipino Flavour by offering a refreshing assortment prepared the fresh and healthy way; No MSG added, lower salt and oil, fresh meat - seafood - vegetables served straight from the kawali as it's ready.

iSLAS means Islands, a Filipino restaurant located in Parkdale, Toronto. The name “iSLAS” represents the 7,641 islands that make up the Philippines. Filipino cuisine is a blend of Austronesian, Malay, Chinese, Spanish, American, and indigenous influences. The flavors are a combination of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy. Vinegar is a common ingredient, and dishes like Adobo are popular. Rice is a staple and is served with various meat, fish, stew, soup, and vegetable dishes. Filipino meals are communal and informal, and traditional meals include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and meriénda (afternoon snack). While utensils like forks, knives, and spoons are used, the primary utensils at a Filipino dining table are the spoon and fork. Eating with hands, known as “kamayan,” is also a traditional practice. iSLAS aims to introduce Filipino cuisine and hospitality to Toronto, and invites guests to embark on a culinary adventure to savor the diverse and flavorful Filipino dishes.

I love Isla’s! It’s a long time Parkdale community treasure. My parents came to visit me for christmas from my hometown and though they grew up in Toronto when they were young, they are in their 70s now and don’t know where to go for lovely places to eat and enjoy themselves, as the city has changed a lot My mother worked for a long time at Womens College Hospital and then Mount Sinai and had many Filipino friends with whom she used to have pot luck dinners, which I did not know. She was so excited to have lumpia and pancit again! My lomi egg soup was incredible, and my dad’s short ribs were perfection and we all enjoyed the fresh oysters and empanadas My brother died last year, and this was our first christmas together since his passing and you made it so special. We will all be coming back ♥️

Fun experience with our friends! Food was delicious, we were checked on a good amount of times, music wasn't too loud, and it was nice and clean. We did kamayan and the value was good!

Everything was great! Glad this place was on Opentable- from out of the country and unfamiliar with the area. The salted fish breakfast was EXCELLENT. I’ve never had anything like that before but it was great!
