In that dusty old warehouse, we saw the potential to create something really special.And so it was that Newcastle’s first modern craft brewery opened its doors in April 2015. Instead, you’ll need to text a special code to a number on the wall and a host will open the door and usher you inside. Exposed brick walls and dark timber are complemented by dim lighting from vintage chandeliers. Holding fewer than 60 guests, it’s this old world ambience that sets Coal & Cedar apart from Newcastle’s bar scene.Ethan and Ryan are the team behind the venture. In 2014, they packed their bags and moved from Sydney to the state’s largest regional city to work on their new dream bar. They found the perfect site on Hunter Street, which was just dingy enough to house a Prohibition-style speakeasy. Transforming the space with taxidermy, eccentric images and many a bottle of booze.

Wonderful atmosphere and the staff are lovely. My entree, vegetarian dumplings was late, but worth the wait. My main meal was forgotten, and the manager intervened. It was sorted out and I was happy. The food and choices of wine, I must say, was fabulous! We will go back again in the New Year.

Meantime is my favorite restaurant in Hamilton -Newcastle, I usually go Tuesday Wednesday nights when trade is a little slower, however there is always more business than one server can handle, Hannah is a great server and Meantime owners should be glad they have her, but there should be 2 servers this close to Christmas.

Great evening out with family and friends. Welcoming atmosphere and staff. Order process is a bit chaotic but does give you a chance to mingle.
