REX at The Royal, now operating out of the newly-renovated theatre, maintains key tenets of the historical site including a stage for live music performances, as well as sweeping arches and other details sustained from the original design. REX at The Royal cuisine pays homage to the great early 20th-century African-American chefs who adapted traditional southern fare to Philadelphia’s urban landscape. We were on 1526 Sansom St. for 14 years and then moved to 1300 South St. We create gourmet Afghan food that you can find in Afghanistan or here at our Philadelphia location. We have mouthwatering flavors starting from our bread to our kabobs. Our bread's recipe and technique have been passed down from the founder's great-great-grandfather, who owned an array of bakeries and managed many restaurants in Kabul. Passed through generations to our chef, who brought delicious meals to 15th and Sansom of Philadelphia. Then from 15th and Sansom to 1300 South St. We have delectable food that you fall in love with and will bring comfort to you, from our meat lovers to our vegans. We had a lovely dinner for girls’ night out! Our server was wonderful, the menu was fantastic, filled with variety but not “too much” and the food was delicious! We will certainly be back!

We enjoyed our second visit to Hawthornes for brunch. I had a delicious matcha latte with lavender syrup that was well made and very tasty. For our meal we shared the Crabby Dick and Chicken and Waffles. Both were delicious! The crab cake was very good and their potatoes are amazing! The service is also charming - all the staff had party hats to celebrate our waitress's birthday.

Had the best experience here! The mezcalita and the pastor ahumado tacos are to die for!! Staff was great, very bright and fun place to be. Will be returning !!!!
