From building society, to bank, to BEAR – this ornate old banking hall site on Derby’s Iron Gate stood empty and forgotten for 9 long years… until we came along.BEAR Iron Gate, Derby sits slap-bang in the centre of the city’s iconic and beautiful Cathedral Quarter; the original hotspot for high-quality food and drink. Opening in 2017 following the success of our Uttoxeter store, the progression to Derby seemed natural for BEAR, as our two founders spent a lot of time in the city as teens, so they have loads of fun memories attached to the place.

The Friary is situated just on the edge of Derby's lively city center. This bright, vibrant and fast paced venue is the place to be for students and revellers alike. The structure is traditional but the Decor is very, very modern. Purple walls with orange borders and the Submarine grey fire place in the games room with astro-turf may give you a heavy indication that at this venues core, it's a Sports Bar but you'd be wrong. The Menu matches the ambiance of the Friary perfectly, everything you'll need for a visit here. Wings, Sharing trays and bites such as the Sloppy Joe Hash Brown Bars which are hash browns topped with beef in a smoky BBQ sauce, bacon, grated cheese and spring onion. Fancy a sweet dessert?     Breakfast menu small but I would say something for everyone. My friend and I went for a maple pancake stack that came with pork belly, scrambled eggs and a full breakfast. The only downside for me is the eggs were very salty and more omelette than scrambled. The rest of the breakfast was delicious. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. The decor inside is nice and of course the view of the marina also. Will definitely go back.

    Had an incredible night celebrating our anniversary. Tasting experience was incredibly interesting and unique. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate my partner's gluten intolerance, and every team member we spoke to were amiable, polite and great conversationalists.

    The staff were soooo friendly and welcoming. Service was amazing and food was out reasonably fast considering it was busy. All the food tasted amazing and fresh and we'll definitely eat here again!

    A very pleasant evening. The food was excellent. Selection of options spot on. Drink options were again spot on. Food and Drink quality 5 star. Service was perfect by friendly staff. We shall be going again very soon.
