COMAL is a gathering place located in Berkeley’s bustling Arts District, just north of the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The restaurant is housed in a single-story building (circa 1927) and features a lush, secluded rear patio with a full bar, covered dining area, and al fresco beer garden with fire pit.

Executive Chef Matt Gandin creates earthy, modern interpretations of dishes from throughout Mexico, with emphasis on Oaxaca and neighboring coastal regions. We offer an “all-Mexican” list of craft cocktails, house-made sangritas paired with our curated collection of agave spirits, and a diverse selection of local beer and wine on tap.

Also please note that Comal charges a 20% service charge in lieu of tips.

We had a delicious meal at Comal. I have never been disappointed. We went with another couple and ordered a variety of appetizers. French Fries (who would think, in a Mexican restaurant!) let me recommend them. Comal knows how to make guacamole-- the right way The chicken liver skewers were delicious, as were the chile rellenos, fish tacos, tequila salmon tostada, and the delightful shrimp with cucumber ceviche. Wish I could have eaten more.

Loved the mezcal flight! We ordered too much food and we loved it all: chicken, enchiladas, tamales! TY!

I like the food here, though it's sometimes iffy. The sound system is excellent. Great cocktails. Food on the most recent visit was disappointing. The chile relleno was fresh and light with terrific sauce, but the cheese on the inside was block-hard and nearly cold. The quesadilla, which changes daily, is reliably good but overly-cheesy; the blue corn tortilla is great. The ceasar salad with cobija cheese was meh and overly dressed. Our seat was right across from the bathrooms and felt like a dining hall, as my husband put it. I enjoy going to the bar for a bite before a show or something but I would avoid the dining room at that time because servers are slammed and the wait for food can be long. The service, while always friendly, was a bit sparse. Never good when you don't know who your actual server is. I like not tipping but 20% on top of an already expensive cocktail gets really expensive -- $50 for a couple of bar drinks. All that said, I will go back because I like the bar.

One of my favorite Bay Area restaurants! Luckily, Matt's famous spareribs were on the menu - NOT TO BE MISSED! Good (short) wine list, very interesting cocktails (and mocktails).

Our table was Dr to the side so was quieter than usual. Ceviche was great

Positives: excellent cocktails, albondigas, ribs, service, Meyer Sound system. Cons: lackluster carnitas tacos, food comes out haphazardly and sometimes with long gaps. Deserts are $$ for what you get.

Never go anywhere else but Comal when in Berkeley. Love this place . Server was attentive & nice . Seems to me though that servers no longer really check back in to see if you’re enjoying your meal. The guacamole & chips & hen of the forest quesadillas were amazing as always . 2nd time in a row though that my main course disappointed. I’ve ordered & loved the fish tacos in the past but not Tuesday night. Too much skin & dark meat resulting in a fishy taste. Finally removed the fish & ate the taco. Mentioned it to bus person & asked his to pass it on to the waiter . Apparently didn’t happen as waiter had no idea . One of the tacos was comped ( my friend Tracy found hers too strong as well) . I look forward to my next visit but maybe be nice if servers checked in on quality of the meal .
