Not sure if it was the time of year (just after New Year) or whether it was a common occurrence, but the menu was extremely limited (more so than what was listed). There were only five options - bar nuts, focaccia, steak, fries and a cheeseboard - when normally the menu listed offers three times the items.
Given the selection, we went with steaks for the both of us (which came with fries) and the cheeseboard. The steak was slightly overdone, but otherwise good quality and not too tough. At $35, it wasn't bad value.
When we were seated no one offered us any menus or told us we had to order at the bar, though we saw others shown seats with menus provided, which was what eventually prompted us to take action. Having said that, the staff were friendly, but they did spend much of their time chatting amongst themselves.
The seating outside along the laneway is quaint and peaceful, but very close to the exit where people were able to step out and smoke. Unfortunately the smoke blew back into the courtyard and was quite unpleasant to be around.
The wines were interesting and good. Lane's Edge definitely is more wine bar than eatery. I would probably opt to go elsewhere for food next time.
All in all, I think there are much better offerings in terms of wine bars that are also eateries in Melbourne. The location is convenient, but nothing really to write home about.
