Shanghai 1814 is an exceptional destination restaurant in an iconic listed building in the heart of Southampton. You won’t have experienced anything quite like it. This is where East meets West in a cacophony of flavour, style, colour and vibrancy. Shanghai 1814 is so-called as the owner’s ancestors opened their first restaurant in Shanghai in 1814 – the time of the Qing Dynasty, China’s final imperial dynasty.

This combination of traditional European architecture with exuberant Chinese interior design is dynamic and exciting. Welcome to Shanghai 1814 and enjoy the ultimate dining experience.

Wow-factor interiors are decadent and glamorous, draped in dazzling chandeliers and adorned with cherry blossom. The menus feature contemporary Chinese dishes that are fresh and flavoursome, created by a Chef who previously worked at Michelin-starred Hakkasan in London’s Mayfair.

Parties of over six guests are required to order from our sharing menu on Fridays on Saturdays. For bookings in December we require an order from one of our festive sharing menus. Overall we were rather disappointed with our visit. The food is of the same quality however the service was no where near as good as previous times. Our section was not overly busy but it was difficult to get the waiters attention to refill our water so I asked for the jug to be left on our table to solve the problem . I was told that this was not possible as the jug was for the whole section which was strange. We were sat near the door and it was rather too cold to be comfortable. The meal was to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday which I put on the booking however there was absolutely no acknowledgment of this which was disappointing. Unfortunately for all these reasons we will not be returning, in a high end restaurant the service really needs to be of a better standard. This is a real shame as this was one of my favourite restaurants to celebrate a special occasion

Recommended by a friend and he was spot on. The food was excellent, beautifully presented, high quality ingredients, generous portions and very tasty. We had a private booth for the five of us and it was great, could actually easily hear each other but still be part of the restaurant atmosphere. The staff were lovely, attentive, professional and fun. The decorations are based around seriously shiny tiles and a huge white ‘tree’ , it’s great and very atmospheric

Absolutely fantastic meal! The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and the cocktails were simply divine. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience. I've already told all my friends they need to visit!

Incredible night. Food was absolutely spot on. Would highly recommend veg dish “morning glory”. Had private booth which was very nice at no extra cost. Service as always was impeccable. Best Chinese around. Thank you for a great evening.

Great service and the best food! Lovely extra touch that they brought birthday cake. We will definitely be returning.
