Aptly named for its locale, Southern Social nestles up to the old Southern Railway’s historic Germantown Depot and sits adjacent to Southern Avenue.

Owners of downtown Memphis’ Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar have opened Southern Social. The top tier fine dining restaurant will reflect the high standards established at Flight.

    Excellent service. Hard to find dining experience in Memphis like this and Coastal. Food overall good. Sea bass not worth the $$-like a fish patty. Great server who was attentive and helped us enjoy our anniversary evening. Will return. Did notice that attire did not matter for some patrons.

    Start out with the gumbo … we share… the quail is always good… shrimp and grits are actually THE BEST… but this trip I was not as hungry so I started with the Ceaser salad and the lump crab and artichoke spinach crepe appetizer for my meal and it was fantastic!

    My ratings are based on a comparison to other fine dining establishments. Our crab claw appetizer was fairly tasteless. Our steaks - ribeye and filet- were excellent. Desserts - strawberry cake and bread pudding- were also excellent. One member of our party got the meatloaf after it was enthusiastically recommended. He didn’t care for it, as it was very dense and a bit gamey. The service was a disappointment. Our server talked so quietly it was difficult to hear her in the loud dining room. When she initially greeted us she asked what we’d like to drink, but no one had given us a drink menu or wine list. Later in the meal my water glass sat empty for so long that I drank my husband’s water. Once his was also empty we finally asked the server for a refill. Our desserts were delivered by a different server and as he said “enjoy!” And turned to leave I asked if we could get some silverware (there was none on the table at this point). And finally, when we paid our check the credit card slip was returned without a pen to fill it out. All of these missteps were minor, but they add up. Following the meal my husband said, “I think we got the B team tonight.”
