Stationed in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Virtue is a Southern American restaurant that leads with a culture of hospitality & kindness. We’ve worked hard to create a warm, honest & thoughtful space. We pride ourselves on unpretentious service, timing & most importantly providing great value. At Virtue we use heritage techniques to create some familiar flavors, & some new ones. We hope to see you soon.

I ordered the blackened catfish and the flavor did not disappoint. The carrots were delicious so I wish they’d add more carrots and less rice. For desert I had peach cobbler and it was too hot so it became syrupy. If it was slightly warm or room temperature it would have been easier and more authentic cobbler. Service was great. I sat at the bar and it was lively.

The food at Virtue is outstanding - biscuits that melt in your mouth, gumbo with a deep, velvety roux base that was lick-the-bowl good, short ribs that would fall off the bone if the bone was still in them and a blackened catfish that would have made Paul Prudhomme proud. The service was likewise outstanding - so attentive and accommodating! I'm not a fan of industrial-type decor though, which was my main criticism. I don't like anything hanging over my head, though the basket-style grates were certainly on trend. Also, the tables were a little close for my liking, although that is seemingly another current trend. I'll be back for the food though!!

First time at Virtue. Food was incredible. Loved the salmon and the chicken was just right for me. The spice meter was moderate. The noise level on the dinning side was high for my personal preference. The red velvet cake was amazing. Very attentive service! Highly recommend.

This was my first time visiting after years of friends telling me about how wonderful Virtue is. This is maybe the best food I’ve ever had in Chicago. Everything we ordered was incredible, including the cocktails. I cannot recommend Virtue enough.

My recent visit to this celebrated establishment was nothing short of exceptional, from the food to the service and overall ambiance. From the moment we were seated, the hospitality was evident. Our waiter was a standout—a consummate professional who exuded warmth and friendliness. He not only made us feel at home but also demonstrated an impressive knowledge of the menu, offering recommendations that turned out to be some of the best dishes of the evening. His attention to detail and genuine enthusiasm elevated our dining experience, setting a high bar for service. We began our meal with three outstanding appetizers. The biscuits with pimento cheese were a revelation—flaky, buttery, and paired perfectly with the creamy, tangy cheese spread. The salad with crispy pig ears was a bold and delightful contrast of textures, combining the crunch of the pig ears with the freshness of greens. The chicken liver pâté was rich, velvety, and perfectly complemented by its accompanying garnishes. Each dish demonstrated a balance of flavors and a deep respect for traditional Southern ingredients. For our main courses, we chose a variety of dishes to sample the breadth of Virtue’s offerings. The salmon was cooked to perfection, its flaky texture enhanced by a flavorful glaze. The short ribs were tender beyond belief, practically melting in the mouth and paired with sides that accentuated their richness. Finally, the fish and grits was a standout—a creamy, comforting dish that showcased the restaurant’s ability to elevate a Southern staple. We couldn’t resist sampling Virtue’s desserts, and we were so glad we did. The banana pudding was a nostalgic treat, executed with a refined twist that elevated this Southern staple. Meanwhile, the red velvet cake was everything you want from this classic dessert—moist, flavorful, and topped with a luscious cream cheese frosting. A very special shoutout to Chef Damarr of Top Chef fame who stopped by our table to chat briefly.

Super service and a super meal. Our cocktails--a Green Ghost and a Mezcal Negron--were excellent (though not on the cocktail menu. You can be confident about the bartender.) Standouts were the oysters, the chicken, the short rib, the collard greens, and the corn bread.
